How To Spend Time By Yourself

We all have those days where we feel like we need to escape from the world but don’t want to go to a club or a bar—we just want to hang out somewhere by ourselves, without other people around. Sometimes it’s nice to be alone, and other times, it can be downright depressing to be alone. But, if you’re the kind of person who enjoys being alone, here are a few ways to make your time alone feel productive.

You know, I do not know if you’ve noticed, but the amount of time we spend with one another has been decreasing. As technology has advanced, our activities have become more structured, and we have less and less free time to do the things that we used to enjoy.

Everyone needs time alone from time to time, but how do you make those alone moments productive? To find out, we talked to a few experts on the subject of self-guidance and compiled their advice into a list of ideas and hints like:

  1. Make a list of your favorite things and spend time with them.

If you’re someone who likes to spend time by yourself, there’s no reason why you can’t do so. As long as you’re not wasting your time with bad habits, there’s no reason why you can’t be alone with your favorite activities.

  1. Focus on your hobbies and interests.

Ever feel like you’re missing out on life? Here’s a great way to make sure you’re not—by focusing on the things you love. If you’re worried you’ve got too much on your plate, ask yourself what you love doing. Are you spending time with the people you care about? Or are you wasting time on social media or other distractions? Once you’ve identified the things you love, focus your attention on them. For example, you could simply turn off your phone for an hour each day or dedicate that time to reading a book.

  1. Do things that help you to relax and de-stress.

There are several ways to relieve stress healthily. The best way to find the stress relief method that works for you is to try a few things and see what works.

If you’re feeling bogged down by life’s stresses, there’s one thing you can do to help yourself: spend some time by yourself. Seriously. If you’re having trouble finding the right balance of alone time and socializing, it could be that you’re overextending yourself. But “being alone” doesn’t have to be an austere concept of loneliness. There are many different kinds of alone time. For example, you might spend time with yourself by doing things that help you to relax, like meditating or napping. You might spend some time alone with someone or something you love—whether a child, a plant, a pet, or a book.

  1. Listen to music.

Life is about to get a whole lot busier for you. The school will be over; you’ll be living with your parents and starting to go to work for the first time. So, all of that means that you’ll be spending a lot of time on your own. There may not be so much time to be alone, but more than you may have thought. For all of you who never want to be alone, you should know that you can spend time on your own by listening to music. Ideally, you should listen to it at least once or twice a day.

  1. Get a massage.

Being alone isn’t always a bad thing. If you find yourself with an important piece of paper or a novel to read, there’s no better way to do it than with a good book. But if you don’t fancy reading, there’s no better way than with a good massage.

Finally, if you find yourself having to spend time by yourself, don’t feel bad because you’re alone. Don’t try to change the fact that you’re alone because that’s not possible. Instead, embrace this time to be yourself. Use it to think about who you are and who you want to be. Refine your interests, and maybe even learn something new. Embrace your love for yourself.
