Navigating the World of E-Liquid Profiles: A Guide to Modern Flavours

Many individuals select an e-liquid depending on the name on its wrapping. Cherry. Vanilla Custard. Arctic Mint. The name, however, is irrelevant to the contents. While you think you’re buying a particular taste, you’re most likely buying nicotine, propylene glycol, vegetable glycerin, and the equipment that turns these substances into vapour. The humectants create aerosol droplets that carry the vaporized substances, and the equipment’s heat and design decide the size and number of these droplets that enter your lung.

The foundation: PG, VG, and how they carry flavour

Basically, all vape juice is made up of two base liquids: propylene glycol (PG) and vegetable glycerin (VG), and the ratio between the two of them makes or shapes everything else.

Higher PG ratios give you a more flavorful, defined taste. PG is thinner and holds on to flavor molecules more reliably. That’s why a 70/30 PG-dominant blend allows the fruit or menthol essence to really shine through. VG’s thicker consistency leads to bigger clouds, but dulls the sharpness of the flavors. In high-VG liquids, you’ll feel the soft edge of the flavor, but the layers won’t be as pronounced.

The flavour pyramid: top, heart, and base notes

For many years, professional perfumers have used a three-tier model to describe how a perfume unfolds in real space and time. The top notes) are what you smell in the first two-tenths of a second – the immediate impression. They’re almost always light, volatile molecules that vaporize easily, and include things like citrus oils, light menthol, or green fruit. They’re also the first to fade. The heart notes are the meat of the flavour, where the most impactful changes happen to your palate across the inhale. Heart notes share some characteristics with top notes, but generally richer, heavier compounds are here. Cream, vanilla, or stone fruit are good examples of heart-note materials. Base notes are what lingers. They have the longest chemical chains and take the most time to fully express, and the most time to leave. Tobacco, musk-adjacent botanics, or deep caramel would be classic base notes.

Device hardware changes what you taste

Most e-liquid guides conveniently overlook this part. Your vaping gear isn’t just a device you hold and use in your hand; your vaping gear creates and releases vapours. And this process affects the very essence of your e-liquid and how it tastes to you.

High wattage/low-ohm devices heat the e-liquid at higher temperatures. That’s good for "warmer" flavours, particularly dessert and cream flavours. Heat will bring out the more complex, satisfying, and filling taste of these types of liquid profiles (think custard, cheesecake, etc). On the downside, high temperatures "burn" some of the lighter volatile fruit compounds before you get to taste them. For example, mango has a lot of very light top-note aromatic esters, but they break down quickly in high heat. If you use a 100W rig to vape a liquid with mango flavour notes, you may not get any of the mild, fresh fruity top notes – they vapourized away.

Pods operate at much lower temperatures and sometimes even specifically targeted cooler vapour. This type of device allows most of those lighter, top-note molecules to come through. This is why mango juices taste so much better on most commercial pods than on monster cloud machines.

The shift toward functional profiles

A growing subset of consumers isn’t first and foremost seeking a flavor experience. They’re seeking a functional one. Vitamins, botanical extracts, and stimulants have made their way into the e-liquid category because those who vape want their habit to deliver on something more than taste. This even includes caffeine vape options, which some consumers are using as a quicker hit than their cup of java in the morning – a trend that reveals just how far from their beginning this category’s applications have evolved.

Terpenes look like another area to watch here. These plant-intrinsic organic compounds are capable of a broader and more nuanced aromatic impact than synthetic esters. As developers learn more, prepare for terpene-led profiles that align more closely with botanical goods than sweet treats.

Managing flavour fatigue

Olfactory fatigue, also known as vaper’s tongue, is a temporary but frustrating situation. You can vape a liquid for almost a year and one day not be able to taste anything anymore. That’s because your olfactory senses get used to the smell/repeated exposure and stop giving you the same signals.

The solution is rotating your e-liquids. The more different the profiles you switch between, the quicker your senses will come back. Going from a heavy cream-based dessert liquid to a sharp citrus or iced menthol will give your senses an actual change to work on. Going from one fruit to another that is quite similar doesn’t make enough of a difference.

Some vapers keep two or three very different e-liquids on the go at all times, not because they’re getting bored, but because it keeps every flavour tasting fresher for longer.

Where this is all heading

Flavored vapes are no longer a novelty. The customers demanding cleaner inputs, functional attributes, and multi-dimensional tastes are not some subset of your customers – they are your entire customer base. Understanding how your hardware plays with your carrier ratio plays with your rotation strategy gives you a lot more agency over what ends up in your customer’s lungs and on their taste buds.
